Essential Oils for Skin Care

Essential oils penetrate and permeate into the skin within minutes to help skin healing and renewal, and can be useful additives to any natural skin care program. They can be used for smoothing skin, improving skin tone, and reducing wrinkles and age spots.

Essentials have properties that make them useful as skin remedies, targeting specific skin problems such as soothing burns or fading blemishes. Various oils have properties that are anti-inflammatory, analgesic, hydrating, antibacterial and anti-fungal.

Cautions:

  • Oils must be diluted for topical use, with carrier oils, soap, alcohol or powder mixtures.
  • Measure by the drop, and don't increase the recommended amount in a recipe to avoid adverse reactions.
  • Essential oils are flammable, so when measuring direct from the bottle take care near open flame.
  • Citrus oils (lemon, grapefruit, lime, orange, etc.) have adverse reactions in sunlight, so wait 6 hours until lying in the sun or using a tanning booth. They can cause abnormal darkening of the skin or even blistering.
  • Pregnant women should avoid the use of certain oils, as well as infants, children, the elderly and persons with certain physical conditions.
